Lago Chungará

One of the world's highest lakes at 4,517 m, mirroring the snow-capped Parinacota volcano.

Lago Chungará sits at 4,517 m in Lauca National Park, right on the Bolivian border, with the perfect cone of Parinacota volcano (6,348 m) reflected in its water. Flamingos, giant coots and vicuñas are common sightings, and most tours also stop at the Aymara village of Parinacota and in Putre. This is a 10–12 hour day with a climb from sea level to 4,500 m in about three hours, so altitude sickness is a real risk. Drink water, eat lightly, move slowly, and skip it if you have heart or lung problems or are pregnant. Only go on the ship's tour or a private tour that guarantees your return to the ship.
