In 2004 builders clearing a plot for a hotel at Calle Colón 10 found a Chinchorro cemetery beneath the foundations. Instead of moving the bodies, the Universidad de Tarapacá turned the house into a museum: you walk on glass floors above around 40 burials, some 4,000 years old, lying in the sand where they were placed, wrapped in reed mats and animal skins. It's small, taking 30–45 minutes, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Chinchorro culture. Combine it with the climb up El Morro, which starts round the corner.
