Thunder Hole is a narrow rock inlet where, on an incoming tide with a good swell running, waves compress into a small cavern and burst out with a booming roar and a plume of spray. Timing is everything: aim for a rising tide a couple of hours before high water. On calm days it is quiet, so check conditions before making a special trip.
