The yellow baroque church two blocks from the Plaza Mayor survived the 1746 earthquake and kept its Moorish-tiled cloisters, a library of 25,000 vellum-bound volumes and, underneath, the catacombs where some 25,000 people were buried before Lima had a cemetery. The bones are stacked in patterns in circular pits. Entry is by guided tour only and the underground passages are low and narrow.
