Early morning, and Saturday for the full crowd
The George M. Hanley market complex just behind the waterfront is where Nevis buys its food, and it is at its loudest on Saturday morning. Stalls sell ground provision, breadfruit, mangoes, sugar apple, thyme and hot pepper sauce, along with craft and clothing tables around the edges. It is small compared with the markets on bigger islands, which is exactly why it is worth the five-minute walk: nobody is set up for cruise passengers, prices are what locals pay, and a bottle of pepper sauce is a better souvenir than anything at the pier. Bring East Caribbean dollars, because nothing here takes a card.
