First tender ashore; the summit clouds over by midday
Nevis Peak is 985 metres of near-perfect volcanic cone in the middle of the island, permanently wearing a cap of cloud, and climbing it is a serious undertaking rather than a walk. The route from Zetlands or Stoney Hill goes up through cultivated slopes into rainforest and then onto a mud-and-root scramble where fixed ropes are the only way up several pitches. Four to five hours return is normal, a guide is close to essential, and the summit is very often in cloud with no view at all. Do it for the forest rather than the panorama, and only on a long call with an early start.
Getting there from the port
