Isla Damas & Humboldt Penguin Reserve

The Humboldt Penguin National Reserve protects three islands off the desert coast north of La Serena, and Isla Damas is the only one where visitors may land. Boats leave from the fishing village of Punta de Choros, about two hours' drive from Coquimbo. The standard trip circles Isla Choros, where Humboldt penguins, sea lions, cormorants and boobies nest on the rocks, and bottlenose dolphins often swim alongside the boat; in summer you may also see whales. It then lands on Isla Damas for an hour on its short trail and white-sand coves. Boats run only in suitable sea conditions and can be cancelled by the harbour master at short notice. Wear warm, windproof clothing, and only attempt it on a long port call with a pre-booked driver or tour.
