At a glance
Port summary
Cruise ships dock at Puerto Corinto's commercial pier on a small island connected by a wooden bridge to the rest of Corinto. The town immediately around the pier is a small Pacific working community — walkable in 20 min — but the headline experiences are inland: León (90 min drive, UNESCO Cathedral and Rubén Darío museum), Cerro Negro (90 min, the world's youngest active volcano with sand-board descents) and Flor de Caña distillery in Chichigalpa (25 min). Independent transport beyond the welcome plaza outside the gate is limited — cruise-line and certified Nicaraguan operators are the practical way to do León/Cerro Negro/Flor de Caña on cruise day. Currency is Nicaraguan córdoba (NIO) but tourist sites and excursion operators price in USD; carry small USD bills.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
Cruise-line and certified Nicaraguan operators are the practical way to reach León, Cerro Negro and Flor de Caña. Confirm operator licence and meeting time before boarding.
📍 Welcome plaza outside the cruise pier gate.
The town immediately around the pier is walkable in 15–20 min. Safe in the daytime, but stay on the main streets.
📍 Exit the cruise gate and cross the wooden bridge into Corinto town.
Use only certified yellow taxis — agree a USD price up front. Cards not accepted, return cash on hand for tip.
📍 Taxi rank just outside the cruise gate plaza.
Local microbuses (busitos) run to Chinandega; not signposted in English and córdobas only — not a realistic cruise-day option.
📍 Bus stop on the road outside the gate plaza.
Driving is on the right but signage is poor and police checks are common; not recommended for cruise-day independent runs.
📍 No on-site rental desk; closest options are in Chinandega 25 km east.
