Across the estuary on the Roseland peninsula, St Mawes is a picture-pretty fishing village of pastel cottages, sailing boats and waterside pubs, reached by a scenic passenger ferry from Falmouth. Above the village stands St Mawes Castle, the beautifully preserved clover-leaf sister fort to Pendennis, also built by Henry VIII and run by English Heritage. Together the ferry ride and the village make a lovely, low-key half-day.
