Early morning, before the climb gets hot
Fort Gustave was one of three forts the Swedes built above Gustavia in the 1780s, and what survives is a low ring of stone walls, a couple of cannon and a small 1961 lighthouse on the same crest. Nobody charges for it and nobody guides you round it, which is part of the appeal. The reason to make the twenty-minute climb is the view: the whole harbour below you with the superyachts stern-to on the quay, your own ship at anchor beyond the entrance, and Saint Martin on the horizon on a clear morning. Go early, because the road up is steep and completely unshaded.
Getting there from the port
Walk north around the harbour and up the hill road; about 20 minutes, steep at the top
