Saint Barthelemy is a duty-free port and Gustavia's two shopping streets, rue de la Republique and rue du General de Gaulle, are lined with the French houses you would expect - jewellery, watches, perfume, resort fashion - in small air-conditioned boutiques rather than a mall. Prices on some brands genuinely undercut Paris because there is no VAT, which is why so many ships list shopping as the headline reason to come ashore here. The catch is the hours: most shops close for a long lunch and again all day Sunday, so a Sunday call means window-shopping only.
