Ahu Tongariki is the largest ahu on Easter Island, with 15 moai restored after a 1960 tsunami destroyed them. Righted in the 1990s by a Japanese-funded restoration project, the platform stretches along the eastern shore backed by the Rano Raraku volcano. The site is famous for sunrise photography, when moai silhouettes emerge from the golden light. Allow 90 minutes to walk the platform and the nearby stone boat.
