Iao Valley is a steep, green inland valley sacred in Hawaiian history and the site of a pivotal 1790 battle. Its centrepiece is the Iao Needle, a 370-metre rock pinnacle draped in vegetation. Short paved paths lead to viewpoints and a stream, making it an easy, scenic stop close to the harbour. Go in the morning, as clouds and rain often settle over the valley later in the day.
