Port summary
Korčula town sits on a small, almost round peninsula on the north-east tip of Korčula island, facing the Pelješac peninsula across a narrow channel. Its old town is a compact oval of honey-coloured stone inside medieval walls, laid out in a herringbone pattern: one main street runs along the spine, with side lanes branching off at angles that keep out the wind and catch the breeze. At the top stands St Mark's Cathedral, at the bottom the Land Gate with the Revelin tower. Korčula claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, and the house linked to his family is one of the town's sights. Only small and mid-sized cruise ships call, mainly from April to October. Smaller ships berth at the town quays, usually in the west harbour beside the old town; larger ships anchor off the Sveti Nikola area to the west and tender passengers into the west harbour on Obala dr. Franje Tuđmana. Either way you step ashore a few minutes from the walls. The old town, the cathedral, Marco Polo House and the museums can all be seen on foot in two or three hours. With more time, take a water taxi to the Franciscan island of Badija (about 10 minutes), a taxi or bus to Lumbarda for its sandy beaches and Grk white wine (about 15 minutes), or the foot-passenger boat across to Orebić on Pelješac (about 15 minutes) for its monastery, beaches and Plavac Mali wineries. The Moreška sword dance is performed for visitors on set evenings in season, usually too late for a port day. Summer is hot and busy; spring and autumn are ideal for walking.
