Port summary
Mangalore (officially Mangaluru since 2014) is the largest port city in coastal Karnataka and one of the rising cruise calls on the Arabian Sea side of India, sitting roughly midway between Goa to the north and Cochin to the south. Ships dock alongside at New Mangalore Port (NMPT) at Panambur, a working cargo port 10 km north of the city centre — Berth 4 is the historical cruise berth and Berth 17 was added in 2023 specifically for cruise ships. The port gate opens onto NH-66 (Mangalore-Udupi Highway); Panambur Beach is 2 km from the gate but sits on the northern side of the port outflow and most cruisers reach it by taxi or shuttle. The city itself splits into three usable halves: Hampankatta and Bendoor in the centre (with the Sistine-of-the-East frescoes at St Aloysius Chapel, the City Centre Mall and Tagore Park on Light House Hill), the Bunder & Bolar heritage quarter at the river mouth (with Rosario Cathedral, the Mangaladevi Temple and the Old Port fish-trade lanes), and the northern coast (Sultan Battery watchtower at Boloor, Tannirbhavi Beach across the Gurupura river and Kadri Park inland). Surathkal Beach and the NITK coast lie 10-15 km north of the cruise berth on the way back to Udupi. Currency is the Indian rupee; cards work at most malls, hotels and chain stores but small Bunder market stalls, auto-rickshaws and beach-shack vendors are cash-only. Uber and Ola operate citywide and are well organised in Mangalore — easier than the Mormugao auto-rank for short hops. Cruise passengers must show their boarding card and passport at the port gate; pre-paid taxi and tour vouchers from the Karnataka Tourism welcome desk inside the gate are the fastest cruise-day option.

🚢 New Mangalore Port — Berth 4 / 17 Cruise Wharf
OSM-confirmed New Mangalore Port (relation 18821078) at Panambur — a working cargo port on the Arabian Sea coast 10 km north of Mangalore city. Berth 4 is the historical cruise berth; Berth 17 was added in 2023 specifically for cruise calls. Modern alongside cruise wharf with a port-shuttle service from the cruise berth to the gate (cargo trucks make the wharf itself unsafe for pedestrians). The gate opens onto NH-66 (Mangalore-Udupi Highway) and the KSTDC welcome desk and pre-paid taxi rank are inside the gate.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
Pre-paid Karnataka Tourism (KSTDC) and private fixed-fare half- and full-day tours covering the city heritage loop, Pilikula nature park, Surathkal beach and Udupi temples — the easiest cruise-day option.
📍 KSTDC welcome desk and tour operators inside the port gate
Pre-paid taxi vouchers with fixed fares to the city centre (₹600), St Aloysius Chapel (₹650), Mangaladevi Temple (₹800) and Tannirbhavi Beach (₹500) avoid the bargaining; metered street taxis exist but are slower.
📍 Pre-paid taxi voucher kiosk at the port gate
Uber and Ola operate citywide in Mangalore with English-speaking drivers and in-app card billing; cheaper than pre-paid taxis for short hops but Panambur gate pickups can be slow because of port-area restrictions.
📍 Open the Uber or Ola app and pin the New Mangalore Port gate
Auto-rickshaws are useful for short hops to Panambur or the city centre but the meters are often skipped — agree the fare before getting in. For full cruise-day touring a pre-paid taxi is more reliable.
📍 Auto-rickshaw rank outside the port gate
Panambur Beach is a 25-30 min walk along an industrial-port road from the gate; the city centre is 10 km away. Walking only makes sense for the beach and only when the weather is dry.
📍 Step off the New Mangalore Port gate onto NH-66 northbound
Self-drive cars are available (Zoomcar, Revv) but Mangalore traffic, narrow city lanes and an Indian-licence requirement deter most cruise visitors — pre-paid taxis are easier and not much more expensive.
📍 Self-drive rental counters in Panambur and Hampankatta

Money & payments
Cards work for most heritage sites, hotels and the malls but bring ₹500-1500 in small notes for auto-rickshaws, Bunder market and beach-shack snacks; the SBI ATM inside the port gate is the easiest place to top up.
