Port summary

Mumbai (officially Bombay until 1995) is India's financial capital and one of the most rewarding Indian ports for independent travellers thanks to the new Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT), a 3-storey purpose-built terminal building at Indira Dock that opened in 2024 and is the first true cruise terminal on the Indian west coast. Ships dock alongside on the Indira Dock face inside the Bombay Port Trust complex; the MICT building doubles as the immigration and arrivals hall and opens directly onto Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg. The Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and Colaba Causeway are all 1-1.5 km south of the terminal — a flat 15-20 min walk along the waterfront — and the Fort and Kala Ghoda heritage quarters (CSMT, the Asiatic Society, St Thomas Cathedral, the CSMVS museum, Flora Fountain and Rajabai Clock Tower) are 0.6-1.5 km west. Marine Drive is 2 km west; Crawford Market is 1.6 km north. The 1-hr Elephanta Caves ferry leaves from Gateway of India hourly and is the most popular cruise day-trip — UNESCO World Heritage rock-cut Shaivite caves on Gharapuri Island. Currency is the Indian rupee; cards work at most heritage sites, hotels, restaurants and chain stores but Crawford Market stalls and the iconic kaali-peeli (black-and-yellow Padmini) taxis are cash-only. Uber and Ola operate citywide; auto-rickshaws are NOT allowed in South Mumbai (below Bandra) so use a taxi or Uber for everything south of Mahim. Cruise passengers must show their boarding card and passport at the port gate; pre-paid taxi vouchers from the Maharashtra Tourism welcome desk inside MICT are the fastest cruise-day option for sights beyond walking distance.

Getting to Mumbai

From the cruise terminal to the city centre

🚶 On footRecommended
18 min💶 Free

MICT walk-off — Gateway of India is 1.2 km (15-20 min flat walk south on the waterfront), Asiatic Society 0.6 km west, CSMT 1.2 km north. The Fort/Colaba heritage quarter is the headline DIY mode here.

📍 Step off MICT onto Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg

🚕 TaxiRecommended
20 min💶 ₹150-600 per trip (≈ €1.6–6.5 / $1.8–7)

Mumbai's iconic kaali-peeli (black-and-yellow Padmini) metered taxis are everywhere south of Bandra and the cheapest option (₹28/km starter); pre-paid MICT vouchers are easier for first-timers.

📍 Pre-paid taxi voucher kiosk inside MICT; kaali-peeli rank outside the terminal

🚕 Ride-hail (Uber/Bolt)Recommended
20 min💶 ₹120-500 per trip (≈ €1.3–5.4 / $1.4–5.9)

Uber and Ola operate citywide in Mumbai with English-speaking drivers and in-app card billing; reliable and cheaper than pre-paid for everything beyond the walk-off zone.

📍 Open the Uber or Ola app and pin Mumbai International Cruise Terminal

🚌 Shuttle busRecommended
30 min💶 ₹2000-5000 per person (≈ €22–54 / $23–59)

Pre-paid Maharashtra Tourism (MTDC) and private fixed-fare half- and full-day tours covering the Fort heritage walk, Elephanta Caves boat, Bandra/Juhu and Bollywood studios — useful for the further-afield North Mumbai sights.

📍 MTDC welcome desk and tour operators inside MICT

🚗 Car rental
20 min💶 ₹2000-3500 per day (≈ €22–38 / $23–41)

Self-drive cars (Zoomcar, Revv) work but Mumbai traffic, narrow Fort lanes and an Indian-licence requirement deter most cruise visitors — pre-paid taxis or Uber are far easier for the day.

📍 Self-drive rental counters in Fort and Lower Parel

🚌 Local bus
20 min💶 ₹5-15 per ride (≈ €0.05–0.16 / $0.06–0.18)

BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport) buses cover the city for ₹5-15 cash but routes are complex, signage is in Marathi and they get crowded; Uber is much easier for cruise visitors.

📍 BEST bus stop on Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg outside MICT
