Morning, when the light on the mountains is clearest
Hanalei Bay is the north shore's signature view: a two-mile curve of sand backed by waterfall-streaked mountains, with the old wooden pier reaching into the bay. The small town behind it has surf shops, food trucks and cafes. It is a long drive from Nawiliwili, so treat it as a full-day plan with a rental car or tour, and keep an eye on the clock for all-aboard. Swim only when the sea is calm; winter surf can be big.
Getting there from the port
Drive north on Kuhio Highway past Princeville and over the one-lane Hanalei Bridge
