Morning, before the heat; the coast is windy all day.
Aruba had its own gold rush in the 19th century, and these chunky stone walls on the windswept north coast are what's left of the smelter where ore from the interior was processed. Some arches still stand, others have tumbled into rubble, and there's no gate or ticket booth: you simply walk in. The setting is half the appeal, with crashing surf and cactus scrub all around. It's an easy stop to combine with Casibari and the Alto Vista Chapel on a rental-car loop of the island.
Getting there from the port
20-minute drive across the island via Santa Cruz; most visitors come by rental car, jeep tour or taxi.
