Port summary
Papeete is unlike any other French Polynesian port: ships dock alongside at the Quai d'honneur on Boulevard Pomare, a 5-minute walk from the Marché de Papeete and 10 minutes from Notre-Dame Cathedral, the giant Place To'ata waterfront stage and the Aremiti ferry terminal that runs to Moorea every 90 minutes. The walk-off is genuine — the entire compact downtown loop, the parks, the Roulottes food trucks at Place Vai'ete and the pearl boutiques along rue Paul Gauguin are all under 1 km from the wharf gate. For a longer day Tahiti opens up: 30 minutes east is Pointe Vénus (the lighthouse and Captain Cook's 1769 transit-of-Venus observation site, with a black-sand beach), 45 minutes east the Faarumai valley with its three cascades, 20 minutes south Punaauia with the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands and the public lagoon beaches at Toaroto and PK 18, and 45 minutes south-west Marae Arahurahu, the most photographed restored marae in the Society Islands. Tahiti'le bus runs all of these (XPF 200 single, no card) and is the first genuine public-transport option in French Polynesia. Currency is the CFP franc (XPF); ATMs are everywhere downtown, cards are widely accepted (a notable contrast to the outer-island ports where most shops are cash-only), and Apple/Google Pay work at chain stores. There is no Uber, Bolt or rideshare anywhere in French Polynesia.
Cruise dock
🚢 Quai d'honneur — Papeete Cruise Berth
Single alongside cruise berth on Boulevard Pomare in central Papeete, immediately east of the Aremiti and Terevau ferry terminals (OSM ferry_terminal node 1038602176 used as proxy — the cruise quay itself is untagged in OSM but sits on the same wharf face). Walk-off through a flat security gate onto the boulevard with downtown Papeete 5 minutes away on foot.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
Central Papeete is a flat 1 km walk-off — Marché, Cathedral, Place Vai'ete, Place To'ata and the pearl boutiques are all under 10 minutes on foot.
📍 Step off the Quai d'honneur onto Boulevard Pomare
Pre-booked round-island coach tours, 4×4 Papenoo safaris and Pointe Vénus + Faarumai half-day combos pick up at the wharf.
📍 Tour kiosks at the wharf gate and along Boulevard Pomare
Tahiti'le bus runs the south-coast (Punaauia, Paea), north-coast (Pirae, Mahina, Faarumai) and downtown lines on a clear timetable; cash only on board.
📍 Tahiti'le bus stops on Boulevard Pomare 100 m from the wharf gate
Papeete taxis are not metered — agree the CFP franc fare before boarding; expensive for cross-island trips, but reliable downtown.
📍 Taxi rank at the wharf gate and along Place Tarahoi
Aremiti and Terevau fast ferries cross to Moorea (Vaiare) in 30 minutes; tight on a cruise day but doable with an early arrival and late all-aboard.
📍 Aremiti and Terevau ferry terminals 200 m east of the cruise wharf
Useful for the Pointe Vénus + Faarumai + Punaauia loop on a long port day; Papeete traffic and one-way streets in the centre make it less attractive than Tahiti'le bus or a tour.
📍 Avis, Europcar and Hertz desks at the wharf and at Faa'a airport
