Port summary
Portsmouth fills most of Portsea Island, a low, flat island on England's south coast, and has been the home of the Royal Navy for more than 500 years. Cruise ships use Portsmouth International Port, the city's ferry and cruise port at the north-west corner of the island, off George Byng Way. It is a working ferry port, so you leave the ship into a modern terminal rather than onto a waterfront promenade. The sights are 2.5–4 km south: Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with HMS Victory, the Mary Rose Museum and HMS Warrior; Gunwharf Quays with the 170-metre Spinnaker Tower and outlet shopping; the cobbled lanes, cathedral and harbour-mouth fortifications of Old Portsmouth; and the seafront at Southsea with Southsea Castle and The D-Day Story museum. On transit calls the port runs a free shuttle bus for independent guests with stops at Commercial Road (the main shopping street), Gunwharf Quays, The D-Day Story and the Hovertravel terminal; check the times on board. Taxis wait at the terminal and the ride to the Historic Dockyard takes about 10 minutes. From The Hard, next to the dockyard gate and Portsmouth Harbour station, the Gosport Ferry crosses the harbour in 4 minutes to the Submarine Museum side, and Wightlink's FastCat sails to Ryde on the Isle of Wight; the Hovertravel hovercraft flies from Southsea to Ryde in under 10 minutes. The Historic Dockyard alone easily fills a full day. The weather is mild but changeable all year, so pack a light waterproof.
