Rangiroa Cruise Port
Avatoru, French Polynesia · Pacific
Cruise ships anchor offshore in Avatoru — tenders ferry passengers to the port.
Tender call into the Tuamotus' largest atoll; Tiputa Pass dolphins, the Blue Lagoon and Île aux Récifs do the heavy lifting.

Port summary
Rangiroa is the largest atoll in French Polynesia — a 75 km coral ring around a lagoon big enough to swallow Tahiti — and one of the most photographed cruise calls in the South Pacific. Ships anchor in the lagoon and tender in to either Ohotu Pier (the main cruise tender wharf, on the south side of Tiputa Pass next to the Hotel Kia Ora) or to the Avatoru wharf 6 km west on the same motu, depending on weather and ship size. There is no road across Tiputa Pass, so the south-side villages of Tiputa, Ohotu and Avatoru are connected by motorized canoe across the 250-metre channel. Almost everything cruise day-trippers want to see needs a boat: the famous Tiputa Pass dolphins (spinner and bottlenose play in the in-flowing tide twice a day), the postcard Blue Lagoon (Lagon Bleu) on the western rim, the Pink Sands (Sables Roses) at the far south-east, and the fossilised coral garden at Île aux Récifs to the south. Pre-booked half-day and full-day excursions cover all of these. The DIY walk-off — Avatoru village, the Temple d'Avatoru, the Vin de Tahiti coral-reef winery and Gauguin's Pearl boutique — is genuine but small. Currency is the CFP franc (XPF); a single Banque Socredo ATM in Avatoru and one near Ohotu Pier serve cruise passengers, USD is accepted at a poor rate at the two pearl-resort hotels only, and most small businesses are cash-only. There is no Uber, Bolt or public bus on Rangiroa.
Cruise docks
🚢 Ohotu Pier — Cruise Tender Landing
OSM-confirmed primary cruise tender wharf on the south side of Tiputa Pass (pier way 379706489 + ferry_terminal node 3830343303). Cruise ships anchor 800 m offshore in the deep lagoon and tender to a flat concrete pier next to the Hotel Kia Ora; the wharf is a 5 min walk from the Tiputa Pass dolphin viewpoint and 6 km from Avatoru village.

OSM-confirmed pier (way 379703565) at Avatoru village on the north-west motu, used by some smaller cruise ships and as the lagoon-tour boat hub on cruise call days. The wharf is 10 min walk from the Avatoru village centre, the Banque Socredo ATM and the Temple d'Avatoru.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
Pre-booked lagoon excursions (Blue Lagoon, Sables Roses pink sands, Île aux Récifs, dolphin-watch in Tiputa Pass) are the headline cruise-day mode; book through Rangiroa Tourisme or major operators weeks ahead.
📍 Lagoon-tour boat operators meet the tenders at Ohotu Pier and Avatoru Wharf
Avatoru village (10 min walk from Avatoru Wharf) and the Ohotu strip (5 min walk from Ohotu Pier) are walkable; the wider 6 km between the two villages needs wheels.
📍 Step off Ohotu Pier or Avatoru Wharf onto the coastal road
Taxis are scarce on Rangiroa, not metered and cash-only — agree the CFP franc fare before boarding; useful for Avatoru-Ohotu hops, not for crossing Tiputa Pass.
📍 Limited taxi rank at Ohotu Pier and Avatoru Wharf on cruise days
Compact 4×4s and small SUVs only — the 10 km coastal road from Avatoru to Ohotu is paved but narrow; useful for visiting Vin de Tahiti and the pearl farms in one go.
📍 Avis Rangiroa desk near Avatoru Wharf and at Hotel Kia Ora
Bicycle rental (XPF 1500/day) and scooter rental (XPF 3500/day) are popular on Rangiroa's flat 10 km Avatoru-Ohotu strip; bring sunscreen, the Tuamotu sun is intense.
📍 Bicycle and scooter rental kiosks at Avatoru Wharf
There is no public bus service anywhere on Rangiroa.

Money & payments
Bring CFP francs from Tahiti or your previous Polynesian port — the two ATMs in Avatoru and Ohotu often have queues or are out of cash on cruise days; USD is accepted at a poor rate at the pearl-resort hotels only.
