Port summary
Rarotonga is the cruise gate to the Cook Islands — a self-governing nation in free association with New Zealand — and one of the most relaxed Polynesian cruise calls. Ships anchor outside Avatiu Harbour (the harbour itself is too small for modern cruise ships) and tender 600 m to a flat concrete pier in the heart of Avarua, the capital. The walk-off is excellent: the Punanga Nui Market is a 2-min walk from the wharf, the white-coral Avarua Cook Islands Christian Church and the Cook Islands Library and Museum are 5-10 min east, and Banque BCI / ANZ / BSP ATMs sit along the same Ara Tapu road. For a longer day the 32 km coastal ring road circles the island in 90 minutes and is served by the Cook's Bus 'Round-the-Island' clockwise and anti-clockwise circulators (NZ$5 per ride or NZ$16 day pass). Headline DIY day-trip stops are Muri Lagoon and Te Vara Nui on the east coast (15 min by bus), Wigmore's (Papua) Waterfall and Titikaveka snorkel beach in the south (20 min), and Black Rock + Aroa Beach + Highland Paradise on the west. Te Rua Manga (The Needle) is a 4-hour cross-island trek for confident hikers only. Currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZD); cards work almost everywhere, contactless is standard at supermarkets, ATMs are plentiful, and the Cook Islands also issue their own coins (legal tender locally only — keep them as souvenirs). There is no Uber or rideshare on Rarotonga but taxis are reliable and metered.

🚢 Avatiu Pier — Cruise Tender Landing
OSM-confirmed harbour node 2171160880 inside Avatiu, Avarua's main commercial harbour. Modern cruise ships are too large for the harbour itself so they anchor 500-800 m offshore on the lee side and tender to a flat concrete pier inside the breakwater. The wharf gate opens onto Ara Tapu road, with central Avarua and the Punanga Nui Market within 5 minutes' walk.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
Central Avarua is a flat 1 km walk-off — Punanga Nui Market, the Cook Islands Christian Church, the Library & Museum and the ATMs are all within 10 minutes on foot.
📍 Step off the Avatiu pier onto Ara Tapu
Cook's Bus circles the 32 km ring road clockwise and anti-clockwise every 30 min Mon-Sat (no Sunday service); the day pass covers both directions and any number of hops.
📍 Cook's Bus stop on Ara Tapu 100 m east of the wharf gate
Round-the-island coach tours, Captain Tama lagoon cruises and Te Vara Nui dinner-show transfers all pick up at the wharf.
📍 Tour kiosks at the wharf gate and along Punanga Nui Market
Rarotonga taxis are metered — confirm the meter is on; useful for hops to Muri or Aroa Beach but the Cook's Bus is much cheaper.
📍 Taxi rank at the Avatiu wharf gate
Compact cars and small SUVs only; the 32 km ring road is fully paved and easy. Visitors no longer need a Cook Islands driving permit (rule changed in 2017).
📍 Avis, Budget and Polynesian Rent-A-Car desks 200 m east of the wharf
Scooter rental (NZ$25/day) and bicycle rental (NZ$15/day) are popular options on the flat ring road; helmets required, sunscreen essential.
📍 Scooter and bicycle rental at Polynesian Rent-A-Car and Island Car Hire
