There is no public bus to Tekapo on cruise days, so the DIY is a rental car (agencies deliver to the berth or the CBD; ~$60-90 NZD/day plus fuel). It is about 1 hr 50 each way on SH8; the Church of the Good Shepherd is free to view, and the Mount John summit road has a small toll (~$8 NZD). Sharing a car among 3-4 makes this far cheaper than the coach per head.

This is a pure walking DIY - the whole thing is on foot from the berth. Caroline Bay is beside the port; the Te Ana centre (entry ~$25 NZD) is in the Landing Service Building a few minutes into the CBD; the South Canterbury Museum and Sacred Heart Basilica are free and close by. Check Te Ana's hours before you go, as it is closed Sundays and Mondays.
