Ships berth at CentrePort - usually Aotea Quay, about 2 km north of the CBD, and sometimes Queens Wharf right in the city. There is no cruise terminal building, but a dockside 'cruise zone' of shipping containers has an information centre, a New Zealand gift shop, toilets and a convenience store, and a shuttle runs into town to Lambton Quay. Wellington rewards independent travellers: the harbour capital is compact and walkable, with the free national museum Te Papa, the historic red Cable Car up to the Botanic Garden and Lady Norwood Rose Garden, Parliament's 'Beehive', the Mount Victoria lookout and the cafe-and-craft-beer buzz of Cuba Street. Beyond the centre lie Weta Workshop in the film district of Miramar, the fenced wildlife sanctuary of Zealandia, and - about 80 minutes over the Remutaka hill - the vineyards of Martinborough. Public transport is good (Metlink buses and trains, contactless or Snapper), Uber operates, English is spoken, and New Zealand is nearly cashless. Wellington is famously windy, so bring a layer.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
A shuttle runs from the Aotea Quay berth into the CBD, dropping near Lambton Quay and the historic Government Buildings - the easy way in, especially for limited mobility.

From Aotea Quay it is a flat ~2 km (about 25 min) waterfront walk into the city; if your ship uses Queens Wharf you step off right in the centre.
