Aitutaki Cruise Port
Arutanga, Cook Islands · Pacific
Cruise ships anchor offshore in Arutanga — tenders ferry passengers to the port.
Plan my port daysShips anchor outside the reef and tender through the narrow Arutanga passage to the harbour in Arutanga village. The village is walkable from the landing, but the real reason to come is the lagoon: book a lagoon cruise to One Foot Island, Honeymoon Island and the giant clams.

Port summary
There is no cruise berth on Aitutaki. Ships anchor or hold position off the west coast, outside the barrier reef, and passengers are tendered through the narrow, dredged Arutanga passage to the harbour in Arutanga. Since late 2025 a new jetty at the Aitutaki Game Fishing Club foreshore handles tenders alongside the old wharf. The tender ride takes 15–30 minutes, and ocean swell can cancel the call even when the lagoon looks calm. Arutanga is a small, friendly village: the 1828 CICC church, the post office, two banks with ATMs, the island's visitor centre, a supermarket and the Game Fishing Club bar are all within a few minutes' walk of the landing. There is no public bus. Taxis are few and best pre-booked; scooters, bicycles and small cars can be hired a short walk north in Ureia and Amuri. The lagoon is the main event. A lagoon cruise (around 5–6 hours with a barbecue lunch) visits sandbars and motu such as One Foot Island, Honeymoon Island, Maina and the giant clam garden. Some operators leave from Arutanga harbour itself; others pick up at the wharf and sail from Ootu on the east side. Book ahead and tell them your all-aboard time: on ship days the boats fill quickly. With less time, walk the village and church, then scooter or taxi up to Maungapu for the view over the whole lagoon, or swim and snorkel at Tamanu Beach in Amuri or Ootu Beach. Bring NZ dollars: cards work at resorts and some shops, but stalls, taxis and small cafés want cash. Sunday is very quiet: most shops close and only a couple of lagoon operators run.

Walk from the tender jetty to the CICC church (5 min, free), then 10 min north to Rino's Rentals in Ureia for a scooter (NZ$25–35/day, ~€15; drive on the left; unless your licence covers motorbikes, get a visitor's motorcycle licence (≈ NZ$2.50) at Arutanga police station). Ride 10 min to the Maungapu trailhead opposite Paradise Cove for the 20–30 min climb, then take the Piraki road to the lookout and loop back via Amuri for lunch.
