Port summary
Ancona was founded by Greeks from Syracuse and has been a port ever since; Emperor Trajan enlarged the harbour, and his marble arch of 115 AD still stands on the quay. The city is built on hills around the curve of the harbour, so the old town climbs steeply from Piazza della Repubblica and the Loggia dei Mercanti up to Piazza del Plebiscito and the Romanesque Cathedral of San Ciriaco on Guasco hill, with wide views over the Adriatic. The port is mainly a ferry hub for Greece and Croatia, so on summer ferry days the quays are busy; follow the marked pedestrian route out of the port area. Ancona itself fills a half day well. For the rest of the day, the white limestone cliffs of Monte Conero shelter some of the Adriatic's prettiest beaches at Portonovo, Sirolo and Numana, Loreto's Basilica of the Holy House is one of Italy's great pilgrimage sites, and the Grotte di Frasassi are among Europe's largest show caves. Try brodetto all'anconetana (fish stew), stoccafisso all'anconetana and, in summer, the wild Portonovo mussels called moscioli, with a glass of Rosso Conero.
