Hadrian's Gate (Uckapilar, the 'Three Gates') is a beautifully preserved marble triumphal arch built to mark the visit of the Roman emperor Hadrian in 130 AD. Its three arches and carved ceilings frame the main pedestrian entrance into Kaleici, and the worn marble thresholds still show the ruts of ancient carts. It is free, always open and the natural place to start an old-town walk.
