Perge is one of the great ancient cities of the Turkish south coast, spread over a broad plain 18 km east of Antalya. You enter through a Hellenistic gate with round towers and walk a long colonnaded street, still grooved by chariots, past baths, an agora, a huge stadium and a theatre. Much of the finest sculpture is now in the Antalya museum, but the scale and completeness of the site are extraordinary. There is almost no shade, so bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes, and start early on a hot day.
Getting there from the port
Taxi or private tour to Aksu, about 18 km east; little shade on site.
