🕐 Best time to visit

Late-afternoon light; sunset

Perched on pink-granite ledges at the island's southwestern tip, Bass Harbor Head Light is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Maine. The 1858 tower is still an active aid to navigation and the keeper's house is a Coast Guard residence, so only the grounds are open, but the short paths to the classic view of the light are the whole point. Late-afternoon light is best.

Getting there from the port

Car or taxi, about 45 minutes; or Island Explorer Route 7 to the area then a short taxi/walk. The grounds only; the lighthouse is not open inside.
