Opened in 1893, the Vizcaya Bridge (Puente Bizkaia) was the world's first transporter bridge: a gondola hangs from a steel span 45 metres up and glides across the river mouth between Las Arenas in Getxo and Portugalete, carrying cars and foot passengers without blocking ships. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still in daily use. The cheap gondola crossing takes a couple of minutes; for the full experience, take the lift to the upper walkway for views over the Abra bay and back towards your ship. From the cruise terminal it's about 30 minutes on foot along the Las Arenas waterfront, or a short walk from Areeta metro.
