Facilities at the pier are basic, and Bitung itself is a working fishing town rather than a sightseeing destination: the market, the harbour of wooden cargo boats at Pateten and the waterfront are a 15–20 minute walk away. The reason ships call here is what lies around it. Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve, about an hour's drive north, is one of the best places in Asia to see spectral tarsiers, crested black macaques and hornbills on a ranger-guided forest walk. Right across the harbour, the Lembeh Strait is world-famous among divers for muck diving and weird small creatures; boats leave from the Pateten area. Inland, the Minahasa highlands around Tomohon offer volcano views, the steaming, colour-changing Lake Linow and a famously unfiltered traditional market, and Manado, the provincial capital, is 45–60 minutes away on the toll road. Public transport is limited to mikrolet minibuses and local boats, so for anything beyond town a pre-booked driver (around Rp1,000,000–1,200,000 per car per day) or a small-group tour is the practical option. Bring enough rupiah in cash: park fees, boats, markets and drivers rarely take cards, and ATMs can refuse foreign cards.
