Beomeosa, the 'Nirvana Temple', was founded in 678 on the wooded slopes of Geumjeongsan and remains one of Korea's principal Zen (Seon) temples, the head temple of its order. Its weathered wooden halls, stone pagodas, gates and lotus ponds sit among tall trees a world away from the city below, and it runs templestay programmes for those who want to experience monastic life. Reached by metro and a short bus or taxi, it makes a peaceful half day and pairs naturally with a walk on the Geumjeong Fortress trails nearby.
