Haedong Yonggungsa is unusual among Korean temples in standing not in the mountains but right on the rocky seashore, its halls and pagodas clustered above the crashing waves at Gijang, north-east of the city. Founded in 1376 and rebuilt in the 20th century, it is reached down a long stair past the twelve zodiac guardians, and is believed to grant a wish to sincere visitors. It is stunning at sunrise, on Buddha's Birthday when it is hung with lanterns, and at high tide when the sea surges below the shrine - and correspondingly busy, so come early.
