Begun in 1195 by the Almohad caliph Yacoub al-Mansour, the Hassan Mosque was meant to be the largest in the world, but construction stopped at the sultan's death and a 1755 earthquake collapsed most of it. The 44 m unfinished minaret and 200 surviving columns share an esplanade with the white-marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V, completed in 1971 — both UNESCO-listed.
