Port summary

Chioggia is often called 'Little Venice': a fishing town of canals, bridges and painted houses laid out like a fishbone, with the broad Corso del Popolo as its spine and Canal Vena running alongside. It is Italy's leading fishing port, so the morning fish market and the seafood in the bacari along Riva Vena are the real stars. The main sights (the Duomo, the clock tower of Sant'Andrea, San Domenico church and the Museum of the Southern Lagoon) are all within a compact, flat old town. Across the bridge, Sottomarina has a long sandy Adriatic beach and a seawall promenade. Many cruises start or end here because large ships can no longer sail into central Venice. If you want Venice on a transit call, be realistic: it is 1.5–2 hours each way, buses and boats run every 30–60 minutes, and you will need to leave the city by early afternoon to be back with a safe margin.
