Barrio Inglés Heritage Walk

The Barrio Inglés, or English Quarter, is the few blocks of Coquimbo just uphill from the port, laid out when British merchants and shipping agents ran the copper and silver trade in the 19th century. Its two-storey timber houses, painted in bright colours and fronted by wooden balconies, were largely restored after the 2015 earthquake and tsunami. Start at Plaza Vicuña Mackenna and wander along Aldunate, Argandoña and the streets around them; many houses now hold seafood restaurants, craft-beer bars and small galleries. It's lively at lunchtime and in the evening, quieter in the morning. The quarter is a free, easy walk from the ship, and pairs naturally with the fish market on the Avenida Costanera.
