Pendennis Castle stands on the headland above Falmouth, one of a pair of artillery forts Henry VIII built in the 1540s to guard the harbour mouth. English Heritage now runs it, with a Tudor gun tower, later barracks, wartime exhibitions and cannon, and sweeping views across the estuary to St Mawes and out to sea. It is a 20-25 minute uphill walk or a short taxi from the dock.
