Port summary
Ferrol sits deep inside a sheltered ría on Galicia's north-west coast, and the sail-in past the twin castles of San Felipe and A Palma is one of the most dramatic in Spain. Since the 1700s it has been the home of the Spanish Navy's northern fleet, and the city was laid out around the royal arsenal on an Enlightenment grid. Cruise ships berth at the Fernández Ladreda quay (454 m) or the shorter outer jetty, both beside the Curuxeiras marina at the western end of town. There is no passenger terminal building yet: Global Ports Holding is building a small terminal on the outer quay, due to open in spring 2027. From the quay you walk straight into Ferrol Vello, the old fishermen's quarter, where a guidepost marks kilometre zero of the Camino Inglés and the municipal tourist office sits on Paseo da Mariña. Uphill to the east, the grid of A Madalena holds the Modernista facades of Rúa Real and Rúa Galiano, the market, the co-cathedral of San Xiao and Praza de Armas, all within 15–20 minutes on foot. Next to the arsenal walls, Exponav (the shipbuilding museum) and the free Naval Museum make a good naval-history morning. For the coast, take a taxi to Castelo de San Felipe (free self-guided visit), the surf beach at Doniños or the lighthouse on Cabo Prior. With a full day, the medieval town of Pontedeume and the Atlantic woodland of the Fragas do Eume, or the cliffs of San Andrés de Teixido, are 25–50 minutes away. A Coruña is about 55 km and Santiago de Compostela 95 km; for Santiago a ship's tour or a pre-booked transfer is the safer choice. Shops close for lunch (about 14:00–17:00) and on Sundays, and several museums close on Mondays.

Public transport from Ferrol to Santiago is slow and thin, so the realistic independent option is a small-group shore tour with port pick-up and an on-time-return guarantee, such as Spain Day Tours (€89 pp, about 75 min each way). Cathedral entry is free; the Pórtico da Gloria and museum are paid extras, and lunch in the old town runs about €20.
