Port summary

Fort William grew around a 17th-century government fort built to control the Jacobite clans, and today it is the busiest base for walkers and climbers in Scotland. The town sits at the southern end of the Great Glen, where the West Highland Way ends and the Caledonian Canal begins, with Ben Nevis (1,345 m) rising behind it. Cruise ships anchor in Loch Linnhe directly opposite the town, one of the shortest tender rides in Scotland. Tenders land at the pontoons beside the West End car park at the southern end of the High Street. Small expedition ships sometimes use the Town Pier just to the north. There is no terminal, and on busy days coaches for ship tours wait in the car park. The town fills a relaxed half day. Walk the pedestrian High Street, visit the free West Highland Museum for Jacobite relics and the secret portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and stroll the waterfront to the Old Fort ruins. A 90-minute wildlife cruise to Seal Island leaves from the Town Pier. Beyond town, transport needs planning. Glen Nevis, with its visitor centre, Lower Falls and the gorge walk to Steall Falls, is 10–25 minutes by taxi. Neptune's Staircase, eight locks on the Caledonian Canal, and the ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle are about 10 minutes away, as is Ben Nevis Distillery. The Nevis Range gondola climbs Aonach Mòr for huge views, about 15 minutes by taxi or the 41 bus. Glenfinnan's viaduct and monument and the dramatic valley of Glencoe are each about 30 minutes by car. The Jacobite steam train runs from the station to Mallaig and back in about six hours, so only consider it on a long port day and book months ahead. Expect rain in any month, and midges on still summer evenings.
