Plan my port daysCargo-port stop: ships berth at the Shannon Foynes Port quays (or occasionally anchor and tender to the yacht club), about 10 minutes' walk from the village. The Flying Boat & Maritime Museum is the highlight on foot. Adare, Limerick city and Bunratty Castle are 30–50 minutes away by pre-booked taxi or tour.

Port summary
Foynes was once the busiest civil airport in Europe. Between 1937 and 1945 the great transatlantic flying boats landed on the Shannon here, and in 1943 the chef Joe Sheridan invented Irish coffee to warm up stranded passengers. Today it is a quiet estuary village of about 500 people, with Ireland's largest bulk port on its doorstep. Cruise calls are few and the ships are mid-sized. They berth at the deep-water quays of Shannon Foynes Port, a busy working harbour handling coal, grain and fuel, so you cannot wander around the quays. Follow the ship's directions to the port gate on the N69, which is right at the edge of the village. Some smaller ships anchor off Foynes Island instead and tender passengers to the Foynes Yacht Club pontoon. In the village, the Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum fills one to two hours: a full-size replica of a Boeing 314 flying boat, the original terminal and radio rooms, a Maureen O'Hara exhibition and an Irish coffee demonstration. Then stroll the harbour to the yacht club, or walk or taxi up Knockpatrick hill for a wide view over the estuary. For a bigger day, book a taxi or driver-guide. Askeaton's friary and castle ruins are 15 minutes away, Adare's thatched cottages and Desmond Castle about 30 minutes, and Limerick city with King John's Castle 40–45 minutes. Bunratty Castle & Folk Park is about 50 minutes. The Cliffs of Moher are around two hours each way, so only consider them on a ship tour. Buses are infrequent and taxis are scarce, so arrange transport before you sail.
