Cimavilla Old Quarter Walk

Cimavilla is the knuckle of land that sticks out between Gijón's marina and San Lorenzo beach, and it's where the town began: first a Roman settlement, later a tight-knit quarter of fishermen and cigar-factory workers. Start in the arcaded Plaza Mayor with the town hall, then wander up past the Palacio de Revillagigedo and the Jovellanos birthplace museum. The lanes climb gently to the Cerro de Santa Catalina park and Chillida's Elogio del Horizonte sculpture, with old gun emplacements and big views along the coast. Come back down via the Campo Valdés Roman baths and San Pedro church at the head of the beach. The quarter is packed with cider houses, so plan to end the walk with a bottle of sidra and a plate of something Asturian.
