DIY 6/10

Docked port inside the commercial harbour: downtown Guaymas is a 10-minute taxi ride (or a hot 25-minute walk), and San Carlos' beaches, Tetakawi peak and boat trips are about 30 minutes away by taxi or tour.

Sonora has a US State Department Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) advisory: stay in Guaymas and San Carlos, use taxis from the port gate or booked tours, and be back well before all-aboard.

Port summary

Scheduled cruise calls only started in 2023, and Holland America Line runs almost all of them, with the odd luxury or expedition ship. The cruise terminal sits inside the fenced commercial port, so you leave through the port gate, where taxis and guides wait on ship days. Downtown Guaymas is compact: the Malecón, the municipal market, Plaza 13 de Julio and the Templo de San Fernando are all within a few blocks and make an easy, inexpensive half day. Most visitors head for San Carlos instead, about 20 km away: Playa Los Algodones, the Mirador Escénico viewpoint, the twin peaks of Cerro Tetakawi and boat trips out on the Sea of Cortez. Nacapule Canyon, a palm-filled desert gorge north of San Carlos, is reached on a partly unpaved road and works best with a guide. There is no useful public transport from the port itself; a taxi agreed in pesos, a private driver or the ship's tours are the realistic options. Sonora is under a US State Department Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) advisory, so stay within Guaymas and San Carlos, travel by daylight and return to the ship with a generous buffer.
