After Hakodate opened to foreign trade in 1859, Motomachi filled with churches, consulates and merchants' houses, and the hillside still wears that cosmopolitan look. Walking the steep slopes past the Orthodox church, the old consulate and the public hall is free and rewards every detour with bay views.
