Harvest Caye is a private island with no public ferry, so you cannot reach Monkey River independently - this tour is effectively the only way to see it. The free do-it-yourself alternative is to stay on the island: the Wildlife Experience nature area has toucans, macaws and butterflies, and a lagoon kayak (about $35 / €32) lets you look for birds and fish. Walk or take the free tram down the pier to reach both.
