The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum tells the story of the bombing through the belongings, photographs and testimony of those who lived and died that day - a tricycle, a scorched school uniform, the shadow of a person on stone steps. It is deliberately unflinching and can be harrowing, especially for children, but it closes on a clear, hopeful argument for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Allow at least an hour; audioguides and English signage make an independent visit easy.
