Clear days for the Seto Inland Sea panorama
Mount Misen is the 535-metre sacred peak at the heart of Miyajima, cloaked in primeval forest that has never been logged. A ropeway climbs most of the way from Momijidani Park, leaving a steep but rewarding 30-minute walk to the summit, where boulders, a flame kept burning since the 9th century and sweeping views over the islands of the Seto Inland Sea await. Wild deer and monkeys roam the slopes, and the descent passes small temples linked to the monk Kobo Daishi.
