Haleakala is Maui's dormant volcano, whose summit rises above 3,000 metres into a cool, thin-aired world of cinder cones and shifting cloud. The crater views are unlike anywhere else on the island. The drive up is long and winding, so allow plenty of time and bring warm layers; the summit can be 15-20°C colder than the coast. For cruise visitors a guided tour or rental car is essential, and the day-time views are the realistic option given all-aboard.
