Omarakana is the village of the Tabalu, the highest-ranking clan in the Trobriand Islands, and the seat of the paramount chief. It is where Bronisław Malinowski lived and worked during the First World War, gathering the material for his books on the Kula exchange, yam gardening and island life that made the Trobriands famous. The chief's yam house, standing on the central plaza, is usually the largest and most richly decorated on the island. Visitors are welcome, but this is a living village: go with a guide, ask permission on arrival and expect to pay a small customary fee. Omarakana is about 8 km from the tender landing. Hire a truck with a guide at Kaibola and agree a firm return time.
