Port summary
Cruise ships berth at the passenger quay on Vojkovo nabrežje, run by Luka Koper on the north side of the old town. The quay is about 420 m long with 10 m of water, so most ships come alongside; very large ships occasionally anchor and tender. A new passenger terminal opened in May 2025. From the terminal it is a flat 5-minute walk to Tito Square (Titov trg), the heart of the old town. Koper's old town is small and easy on foot: Tito Square with the Praetorian Palace, Loggia and cathedral, the narrow Čevljarska shopping street, Carpaccio Square by the old harbour and Prešeren Square with the Da Ponte fountain. Two hours covers the highlights, including the climb up the cathedral bell tower. The city beach is right by the terminal, and Žusterna beach is 2 km west. With more time, Arriva buses run along the coast to Izola (20 minutes) and Piran (45 minutes), the prettiest of the Slovenian coastal towns. A taxi to Piran takes about 25 minutes. Trieste in Italy is 30 minutes by road. Inland sights such as Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle, the Lipica stud farm, the Škocjan Caves and Ljubljana are 35–75 minutes away by motorway and are best done with a pre-booked driver or tour, as public transport is slow.

There is no practical public transport (Arriva runs Koper–Postojna only about every 4 hours), so pre-book a private driver who meets you at the passenger terminal: about €140 per car return with waiting time, 50 minutes each way by motorway. Book a timed cave slot online; the cave + Predjama Castle combined ticket is €39.50 (cave alone €34.90), and the castle is 9 km from the cave.
