The vast plane tree on Platanou Square is said by tradition to be where Hippocrates taught medicine some 2,400 years ago. The present tree is centuries old rather than that ancient, its enormous branches propped on scaffolding beside an Ottoman fountain and mosque. It is free, right by the castle, and takes only a few minutes.
